Blaugust 8: One Week In


I successfully completed one week straight of blaugust posts. That bodes well because most of them were done even though I didn’t feel like I had anything I particularly WANTED to blog about. Of course, I’m not saying one should force oneself to blog, but since I haven’t been writing at all for so long, it will take a little time and effort to get back into the habit.

The trouble I have is when I don’t have a topic in mind, I can’t really pull from my everyday life because my life in general is either really boring, or involves things I don’t want to write about for a number of reasons. (Or something that is better suited to a planned post as opposed to one that I write in the moment.) Yesterday, trying to figure out what to say, I went and looked at a bunch of writing prompts until an idea sparked. It sounds lame, probably, but sometimes it takes a little something extra to connect to your creative bone. Did you know creativity comes from a specific bone?

No it doesn’t. I’m lying.

The point is, there seems to be a good chance that the rest of my blaugust posts will mostly be quite boring. Half of them may end up being about blogging and the process of trying to return to regular writing (even extremely mediocre writing), which basically turns this into a meta-blog and who would even care to read that?

There’s a reason I actually began to write about food in the first place. It’s twofold: 1. I love food, 2. everybody eats. Food (along with other basic human needs) is probably the only thing that connects everyone on the planet. And I find that interesting.

 

Virtual Renovation


Last post was number 150 on this blog! Except that I went back and deleted a few old ones, so it isn’t really, but oh well!

So yeah, about that… I’ve revamped this blog! Totally new theme and format, which I haven’t totally settled on, but it will be much closer to this than what it was. It will be much easier to browse through posts now with the new menu bar. The names of categories may still undergo some tweaking, but I definitely like what I’ve done so far.

I’m not in love with the theme. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s really cool and I like it plenty, but I don’t think it’s quite right for this blog. I’m keeping it for now, and when I have time to find a better one I will probably change it. Unfortunately, most of the themes I like best are not free, and just buying my two domain names this year was barely affordable (I exaggerate, but not by much…). Until I have a little more spare cash, I don’t get to do any of those fun extra-customization things that they offer if you’re willing to pay an arm and a leg through your nose.

That sounds uncomfortable, huh?

The past few days I’ve been drinking a lot of coffee with egg nog instead of half and half. I love doing this, but even though egg nog is really available all year, I only get it around Christmastime. I rarely drink it on its own anymore, mostly in my coffee. I just had a delicious thought: I would love some egg nog ice cream.

Not too much other food news. I made another unattractive but yummy omelet, and I tried a new chicken dish from my go-to Chinese restaurant that I really like. I’ve been drinking tons of tea, with and without honey, because I have a cold. That’s it.

It’s (Blog) Morphin’ Time!


Get ready, because change is coming. Back when I reached 100 followers I mentioned that I was going to make a few updates to the blog, mold it a bit into a slightly cooler thing. And then I didn’t. But now I’m going to do it. I totally am. If I don’t, then you should remind me I said I would.

Here’s my basic plan:

  • I’m going to change the theme, because it’s a really easy way to make a blog feel refreshed. It will still be something fairly simple and with the same basic setup, probably.
  • I will remove the “Monthly Favorites” tab and just do favorites posts instead. That way, when I skip months, like I’ve been doing since August, it won’t be so obvious.
  • New tabs will appear, for things I have been thinking about doing. The biggest one will be a “Life” tab, which will feature posts about my thoughts on/approach to aspects of life in a larger sense. Once I start making posts, you’ll see what I mean by that. I am also thinking about making a shopping tab, because I love shopping and I keep wanting to write about it. I know it’s totally silly and frivolous, but in the end I do blog for me, so I’ll do what I want! The main content will be store/website reviews and tips, and maybe there will be some hauls stuck in there too. Although I don’t haul. I just buy one or two things at once, usually. I am also considering a restaurant/cafe review tab. I think Cafenation would have to be the first one up there.
  • I will actually rewrite My Food Credo, as I had said I was planning to do.
  • My links and contact info will remain the same.

 

That’s really all I have so far. This is an intended project to be done by the beginning of December. It will probably be something I do in stages, though–I’m thinking this weekend I’ll change the theme and make the Monthly Favorites tab go away, which will be very simple steps. (So if you want to see what I’ve liked, you should look now, while you can!)

And that’s the story. I thought that if I wrote all this out, I would be much more likely to follow through.

Follow the Yellow Blog Road


It’s not really yellow. I just didn’t feel like thinking of a pun for it.

Exciting news: I’ve broken 100 followers! It’s very gratifying for me that this has happened, especially considering I have only had this blog a little more than a year. I realize 100 isn’t that many, when you look at how many views you need to have “real” visibility (whatever that means), but the triple digits is a nice place to be.

It’s a little bit bittersweet when I think about the fact that it took me three years of posting on my writing blog to get that many followers. Maybe I just used to be really bad at blogging. Maybe no one likes my creative work (not the case, but I doubt I’ll ever be a popular writer). Most likely, it’s that food posts are bound to be seen because people love food so much, they want to read about it in between meals. (Or during meals.)

My writing blog is feeling jealous, is the point. But I haven’t been posting much there, so I guess it’s only to be expected that I would not be gaining followers very quickly. I’ve been a bit overwhelmed by life, and as such writing has not been taking very much of my time at all (even though I’ve been thinking about writing pretty much nonstop).

But writing with the aim of gaining followers is not the way to go. Of course I want people to be interested in my blogs (and tumblr, and youtube channel…) but I want followers who really like what I have to say, who appreciate ME and my work, rather than those who found me because I jumped on the twerk-writing bandwagon. I want quality followers, more than quantity.

But quantity would be good too.

I am thinking of starting to revamp this blog a little bit. I want to rewrite “My Food Credo” a bit. It was originally written as an explanation of my foodstyle (a word I still want to make catch on) and also a justification for it. I need no justification. I’d rather try to explain how I feel about food a little more eloquently, and readers can find out for themselves what it is I eat and cook.

I might do a Recipes tab–except, it will be a non-recipes tab, because, well, duh. That way, it will be easier for people who want to find certain types of food.

Yesterday, I made a Real Dinner for the first time in a while. Salmon fillet baked in tinfoil with butter and herbs, sauteed asparagus, also in better and herbs, and tomatoes drizzled with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. The vinegar made the whole plate a mess, but that’s ok. Overall it was delicious. And I just kind of threw everything together, absolutely no recipes, and I like it better that way. My asparagus (asparagi?) were nice and thick, the salmon leaning a little more toward underdone, and therefore wonderfully moist and flaky. As someone who loves salmon sushi, I was even tempted to just eat it raw (but I don’t think I really would have).

I would have taken a picture to show you, but as always I was much more focused on eating, and by the time the salmon was done I had eaten half the tomatoes and asparagus anyway.

Monday Madness NEVER works!!!!


Ah, Mondays. The beginning and ending of an ever-present torture cycle.

The entire point of starting this segment(better word?) was to ease myself into the week by just writing whatever came to mind. I could sit and sip coffee (probably my second cup) and have music playing in the background, most likely not having gotten dressed yet. It was going to be wonderful.

Unfortunately–and I really don’t have any easier way to put this–Mondays are evil. Even if I managed to get plenty of sleep during the weekend, the idea of waking up early enough on Monday morning to write a blog post at home is hilarious. Even waking up in time to have breakfast can be a challenge sometimes. I would rather not do the posting at work, but I wouldn’t mind it if I were early. Unfortunately, arriving to work early requires leaving the house before 8, and would also mean I’m sitting in the boss’s house possibly before they’re prepared for it (because the office is in their house. Saves money I guess).

I’m sure they would like to have a real office as much as any of the rest of us.

But back to the point. I was trying to create a writing frame for the week for myself by doing Monday Madness here, and Five Things Friday to wind down on my writing blog. However, in addition to the other things that happen in framing the week (including me being lazy), I haven’t managed to figure out a way for this to go off smoothly.

In other news, I accidentally spent a bunch of money on some really awesome stuff, and I’m still terrible at youtube videos, but I have to stop complaining about needed a camera,  because that’s not going to change the circumstance.

Monday Fail “_”

The Evolution of a Blog, Not That It Really Matters.


I started this blog intending it to focus on food, and until a few days ago, when I changed the blog name to match the link, that was how I looked at it. I will still write about food, of course. But I was having this problem…

I have another blog that’s just for writing. You can go see it here: http://devajashewaywriting.wordpress.com. There, I try not to ramble on about things that aren’t related to writing. I’ll write about life developments occasionally, but the focus of that site is my writing and, sometimes, the process behind it. I kept feeling the desire to write about food, to share when I make something really delicious without following a recipe (which happens the majority of the time I actually cook anything. Not bragging, just sharing…). So then I started this blog to do that. But I also feel I want to write about other things sometimes. Tidbits of life or whatnot. And I was thinking, “How many blogs do I actually want to have?”

The answer was, not actually more than two.

Luckily, the link name for this blog was “norecipelife” (an option that seemed cooler than “norecipefoodblog.wordpress…”), so, my brain connected some dots and said to me, hey, just make the blog No Recipe Life, and then you’ll be justified in writing about other things here. That’ll keep your blogs down to a minimum.

Seemed like a good plan. At some point I want to turn my writing blog into something resembling an actual writer’s website, so I don’t want to clutter it up with other crap. But I’m happy to clutter this, more personal blog! I’m thinking I will still write mostly about food, but now I’ve opened it up to talk about other things as well.

Speaking of food: My idea about making mini pies has been put on hold until I have more money to buy pie ingredients. My food budget has gone way down lately due to the fact that I spend more money than I should. So, no pies. I did, however, whip up some kind of fried-dough-coconut-pancake thing from stuff I had lying around. Let me tell you a little bit about them. (no pictures. Sorry.)
